Vacation Iceland vs. Real Iceland

I have been to Iceland before, once in 2017 and 2021. Both were vacations and were fabulous experiences. However spending real time in a place is different than a vacation. When I was on sabbatical in Arizona in 2004-05 my wife and I came up with the phrase “there is a difference between vacation Arizona and real Arizona.” What that meant for us was that the place was no longer solely recreational. We lived in a neighborhood with real people–not tourists. We made new friends. We shopped in the grocery stores. We had a normal routine in this new place. We were able to see our new, but temporary home differently, and with new affection. I’m looking forward to this new perspective on Iceland. I hope to engage with and share photos and reflections on “real Iceland” (or at least as real as I can see).

I have more pictures from those trips than I can count. Some are just spectacular. Ironically I took a shot of Reykjavik that I have on my living room wall. I’ll be walking this path most days on my way to the university. I hope to post some new spectacular photos here for you.

Since part of the work has to do with GIS, I hope to post some ArcGIS Storymaps. The photos from the last trip are there (https://arcg.is/0WaHu50) and I’m going to work to integrate some my GIS work here in the blog (see below).
